Fun STEAM Activities for Bigs and Littles

As the Fall weather sets in and outside adventures aren’t as easy, engage in some fun, easy STEAM activities that can all be done (mostly) inside! These projects are fun, hands-on projects that build skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math while encouraging curiosity and teamwork.

The best part? You don’t need fancy equipment or a classroom, just a sense of adventure and a little imagination. Here are some easy and affordable STEAM ideas you can try during your next match outing!

 1. DIY Science Experiments

Science is all about asking “what happens if…?”
Try these quick and exciting experiments:

  • Volcano Eruption: Mix baking soda and vinegar for an instant reaction. Add food coloring for extra flair!
  • Rainbow in a Jar: Layer liquids of different densities (like honey, dish soap, and oil) to create a colorful mini-rainbow.
  • Extract DNA from a Strawberry: Take a look at what every human, animal, and plant is made out of through your average, everyday strawberry!

These simple experiments spark wonder while introducing scientific thinking, observation, prediction, and discovery.

 2. Build It: Engineering Challenges

Encourage creativity and problem-solving with easy “engineering” projects:

  • Marshmallow Towers: Use mini marshmallows and spaghetti noodles to see who can build the tallest structure.
  • Bridge Builders: Test different materials (paper, straws, popsicle sticks) to make a bridge that can hold coins or small toys.
  • Paper Airplane Competition: Experiment with different designs and talk about aerodynamics as you race them!

These activities help Littles think critically and learn that trial and error is part of the process, and part of the fun!

 3. Art Meets Science

STEAM isn’t just about math and mechanics — it’s also about creativity!

  • Nature Prints: Collect leaves or flowers and make prints with paint or crayons. Discuss shapes, patterns, and symmetry.
  • Salt Painting: Draw with glue, sprinkle salt on top, and add watercolor paint to watch colors spread and blend.
  • DIY Kaleidoscope: Use cardboard tubes, beads, and foil to create your own colorful optical illusion.

Art projects build confidence and help Littles express themselves while learning about light, color, and design.

These STEAM activities can help Littles:

  • Build confidence through discovery
  • Develop critical thinking and creativity
  • See that learning can be fun and hands-on
  • Explore future interests and careers in science, art, and technology

When Bigs join in, these moments become even more meaningful, and they Littles that their curiosity, questions, and creativity matter!

Ready to get started? Pick one activity and give it a try this month! Whether you’re building, coding, painting, or exploring, every shared experience strengthens your match, and helps your Little grow in new and exciting ways.

Have a favorite STEAM project you’ve done together? We’d love to hear about it! Send us your photos or ideas at Programs@BigsCM.org!
