September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month: Why You Should Be a Mentor

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass & MetroWest, we know that one caring adult can make a lifetime of difference. This BBBS Month, we’re celebrating the power of Bigs: the volunteers who show up, listen, and help kids believe in themselves.

The research is clear: mentoring works. Littles in our program are 20% more likely to attend college, and, over a lifetime, they earn 15% more income, building financial independence. Even more, being a Little helps reduce the socioeconomic gap by two-thirds, proving that mentorship doesn’t just change individual lives, it changes communities.

But the need has never been greater. According to the 2025 Youth Mentorship Access Report by The Harris Poll:

  • 74% of young people lack access to mentorship.
  • 84% say mentorship opens doors they never would have seen on their own.
  • 83% say mentors bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world success.
  • 81% feel more confident making life, school, and career decisions thanks to mentorship.

Young people today are facing widening disparities, an escalating mental health crisis, and limited access to supportive networks. What they’re asking for isn’t shortcuts or quick fixes, it’s real, authentic relationships with adults who care.

That’s where you come in. By becoming a Big, you can give a child the steady support and encouragement they need to discover their strengths and unlock their biggest possible future. And here’s the best part: you’ll find that mentoring changes your life, too.

This Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, step up and become a Big, because every kid deserves someone in their corner. Answer the call and sign up to become a Big: BigsCM.org/Become-a-Big/.
